Rex grabbed attention as he sat in the crowd watching the fights Saturday night, which took place in Miami. At a point when a fan’s cell phone camera turned on him, Rex was caught giving the one-finger salute (as seen above) to a patron fan, most likely a guy who goaded him for being there to watch Strikeforce, not play in the Superbowl. As a result, Rex would return to the office come Monday to find himself less wealthy to the tune of $50,000.
The week prior Ryan’s New York Jets entered the playoff round as a wild card team, and defeated the favored San Diego Chargers convincingly. His team was a 7 point underdog to the favored Chargers, who prior to the game, looked to be headed to Indianapolis a week later with what should’ve been a win over the Jets.
Instead New York upset their opponent in that opponent’s home stadium, and Rex Ryan would coach quarterback Mark Sanchez to become one of a handful of quarterbacks in NFL history to win his debut playoff game in his first season as a starting QB.
The NFL has strict policies regarding the image they want their coaches to uphold, as well as the way their personnel can act in public when engaging with fans.

Ryan also called his actions “stupid and inappropriate,” while Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum expressed the organization’s disappointment, stating that the situation would be addressed internally.
At a ringside interview, Ryan highlighted the team rivalries between his Jets and their division rival, the hometown Miami Dolphins. During regular season play, the Jets beat Miami in both of their seasonal meetings.
"I want to just tell everybody in Miami, 'Hey, we're coming to beat you twice next year,"' Ryan said during the ringside interview.
