Extensive UFC 2010 Preview: New Modes, New Features, No Couture

UFC: Undisputed 2010: New features and fighters detailedUFC: Undisputed 2010: New features and fighters detailedThe roster for UFC: Undisputed 2010 has been unofficially announced via several insider websites, though confirmations for who reportedly will appear in the game have not been made at this time.

Designer Omar Kendall shared details of the game’s new features, comparisons of the old title to the new title playability-wise, developmental advancements, changes to the existing engine and anticipations for its release in an interview today with Gamespot.

Omar was excited to talk about features new to play modes and the play engine itself, while going over some details of the expanded Career mode, Create-A-Fighter modes, and the elements included in this year's game that compound the effort to produce a realistic and accurate MMA simulator.

Keynotes from the interview are as follows:

* UFC 2009, to date, has sold more than 3.5 million copies.

* Brock Lesnar, who appeared on the cover of the WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain in 2003, will appear on the cover of UFC Undisputed 2010.

* The developers are hard at work tinkering with facets of game play, playable modes and graphics to assure the most realistic experience possible in-game.

* The fighting and physics engine has been updated and revised to include more expansive and martial-art-specific techniques.

* A new “fight camp” concept is being introduced into the game’s career mode, which will give players the opportunity to chose a striking technique and a grappling technique at the beginning of their careers, then worked exclusively on leveling those two techniques. Players can then visit fight camps over the course of their selected fighter’s career to tune or learn specific moves as they advance through the game.

* A new concept to controlling the fighters while clinch grappling and ground grappling has been implemented, changing how players perform clinch pummels and throws - these techniques will now be performed the same way transitions in UFC 2009 Undisputed were.

* Formulations for how the game regards fighters attempting submissions versus fighters defending submissions has changed. Per Omar, the submission calculations will use either a fighter's submission defense or his current energy level expressed as a percentage--whichever is higher. An example given cites a fighter with a submission defense skill of 50. If the fighter has 100 stamina and full (100 percent) energy, the game will look at this energy level, and the fighter will have a great chance of getting out of a submission. If the fighter has 100 stamina and has used the majority of his energy reserves, the game will look at the fighter's submission defense skill; in this case, the technical escape method used in UFC 2009 comes in. It is retained in 2010, and more important now, as it will almost completely replace the retuned “Brute Escape” method.

* A flash submission element has been included to accommodate the existing flash KO dynamic.

* The wall-and-stall method of using the cage to stall, pressure and wear an opponent down has been implemented.

* Greco-Roman wrestling now appears as a grappling style in-game.

* A “universal grapple concept” system has been reworked to figure in the effect the cage can have on grappling an opponent, by way of what Omar refers to as “a rising hierarchy of positional advantage based on how much threat potential one fighter has in relation to another.”

* Over 200 moves can now be selected and equipped to a created fighter in this year’s much deeper Create-A-Fighter mode, replacing the system that allowed users to select only their styles for striking and grappling specifically, and expanding the diversity of the fighters that can be created. A power hand can now be assigned, as can stance (orthodox, southpaw or switch) and posture, rounding out a much more engaging and personalized system.

* Spots for placing tattoos are no longer pre-defined. This interface is more comparable now to a drag-and-drop style of menu. This also applies to placing logos on shorts. Many of the existing sponsors have returned in addition to new ones, and post-fight clothing can now also be selected for fighters in Career Mode.

* A new system, referred to as the “Game Is Watching You” system, tracks everything players are doing during the fighter's career and reflects it through commentary during fights. Commentators Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg will reference the fighter's previous fights, his training partners, titles held, and other things he does during his career. Career opponents will also take notice of performances and adjust their fight styles and strategies to counter strengths and take advantage of weaknesses.

* Improvements and new additions have been made to the Career Mode fighter training format.

* Karate, Greco-Roman Wrestling and Sambo have been added as martial arts disciplined in 2010.

* Online play has been further developed and enhanced via an online Fight Camp mode that allows users to team up under one banner, and fight other camps to unlock new rewards, achievements and milestones. Players can use the virtual space of their fight camp to spar and teach each other the ins and outs of the game. Players can even bring in their Career mode fighters for an online training session to train with other players and get an extra career "cred" boost.

* The Create-A-Fighter system has been tuned to negate the aspect that pumped-up “glitch fighters” created for the leveled playing field. Rather, the system now more realistically awards progressive attribute points and determines technical capability, details of which Omar states will be revealed more thoroughly as May draws nearer.

* New modes include Title Mode, Title Defense Mode and Tournament Mode. Classic Fights Mode has returned with substantial changes.

UFC: Undisputed 2010 releases May 25th of 2010.
