Respect in the Cage 3 Results
Respect in the Cage 3: From the Fox theater in Pomona, CaliforniaA unique blend of Mixed Martial Arts and a party atmosphere highlighted Respect in the Cage 3 and perhaps in direct conflict with the cliché “party all night long,” 5 of the 7 scheduled bouts ended in less than 63 seconds. In those bouts, a total of 3 minutes and 1 second of cage time was recorded and the rear naked choke was the chosen method of completion in most cases.
In the night’s opening bout, (4-1) made short work of David Barnett, rushing him into a clinch where he easily hopped on his back and secured a standing rear naked choke. The win improves the California Submission Wrestling product’s record to 4-1 while the Inland Empire-based Unbreakable Gym product drops to 1-1.
A featherweight bout followed and served as the 2nd longest and also the most competitive fight on the card. Cooper Gibson came in sporting Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s replicated shorts, complete with rear side eyes. He brought his best Shogun impression as well, outstriking Chris Mercardo in the first round easily as Millennia MMA product mounted little offense of his own. In the second, Gibson was able to shoot and score a takedown where he quickly got to full mount. But Mercardo slipped away and returned a shot that opened up a chance for a standing rear naked choke of his own. Gibson managed to do a full front flip in attempt to smash his backmounted dominator into the canvas but that only allowed the choke to be sunk deeper and he would have to tap.
Matthew Clarmont Interviews Recent Bellator Signee, Georgi Karakhanyan
Georgi Karakhanyan: Featherweight prospect, Bellator fighterWhen Bellator Fighting Championships began releasing the names of those who would populate their 2010 roster, eyebrows began to progressively raise with each passing day's announced signing. They raised considerably more when the featherweight tournament was confirmed to include one Georgi Karakhanyan.
“Georgi K.” is how he is endearingly referred to by most. “Insane” is how he fights and so it serves as a fitting nickname for someone who has progressed so much in such a compressed period of time. In just over 3 years of professional fighting, he has compiled an otherworldly 12-1 record and has quickly become the subject of future top 10, 145 pound discussions. He hasn't trained for much longer than that either and he didn't originally intend on dedicating his future to the sport of MMA.
“I started getting into Brazilian jiu jitsu in April of 2006. It was nothing serious, nothing like 'oh I was going to become a professional fighter' or 'I was going to be in MMA.' It was basically just to see what Brazilian jiu jitsu was all about,” said Georgi when asked about his trek into MMA. 3 short years may indicate that he was a natural at the Brazilian martial art, but it was hard work and determination that yielded the success story we see today.
Strikeforce: Miami Payouts Disclosed
Strikeforce has revealed their payout figures for their Strikeforce: Miami event, which took place this last Saturday, January 30th, 2010.
Of interesting note is the discrepancy in pay scales in the co-main event match between champion Cristiane Santos ($35,000 including win bonus) and challenger Marloes Coenen ($2,000), as well as the pay discrepancy for Robbie Lawler ($100,000) and Melvin Manhoef ($5,000). Marloes went on to give Cyborg the most competitive fight she’s had in Strikeforce yet, despite being bullied around the ring by a much more physically dominant Cyborg. In his fight with Lawler, Manhoef was landing repetitiously with thunderous leg kicks before Lawler fed him a fight-ending short hook, one of three he landed the entire fight, to seal the deal and end the fight via knockout.
Also of note is the payout to NFL great Herschel Walker (a whopping $600), who reportedly donated what would’ve been a six-figure payout to charity.
Frank Shamrock vs. Pat Miletich Verbally Agreed Upon for May Strikeforce Event
The Croatian Sensation: Ready to meet Shamrock in MayComing off of an impressive card put on by up-and-coming promotion Strikeforce, it seems that this weekend’s anticipated UFC 109 bout between two MMA legends isn’t the only one that we have to look forward to.
This weekend, MMAWeekly confirmed that talks have already begun between Frank Shamrock (23-10-2) and Pat Miletich (29-7-2) to negotiate the terms of a bout in May, at an as-of-yet-undisclosed Strikeforce event.
Currently, Strikeforce has no events planned for the month of May, and has made no announcements regarding one.
Miletich returned to MMA following a years-long layoff, where he refocused his efforts on training the fighters of his team Miletich Fighting Systems back home in Bettendorf, and would eventually step in to coach his own International Fight League team, the Quad Cities Silverbacks.
Van Damme Has Van Death Wish: Request to Fight Olympic Gold Medalist Denied
Van Damme as "Guile": Man, did this movie suck.Belgian action movie star Jean Claude Van Damme, whose starred in more than 40 martial-arts themed action movies, recently revealed his motivations to get in the ring for real and mix it up with an Olympic gold medalist.
However, as was reported months ago as a likely outcome to the push to get in the ring, Van Damme was recently denied his license to fight in the state of Nevada, citing concerns for his health and safety, and also a more strict set of guidelines for fighters age 35 and older.
This coming weekend, 45-year old Mark “The Hammer” Coleman will take on 46-year-old Randy “The Natural” Couture in a fight that could’ve (and perhaps should’ve) happened more than a decade prior. This is of relevance in light of the fact that Van Damme recently applied for licensing and was denied at his own age of 49.
Four fighters age 35 or more (Couture, Coleman, Matt Serra, 35, and Frank Trigg, 37) who are competing on the UFC 109 card were asked to submit neurological evaluation for clearance to compete on the card, highlighting the more meticulous guidelines set for aging athletes in combat sport.
Though he took place in some of the most memorable fight scenes on the silver screen in the 80’s, Van Damme, who will turn 50 on October 18th of 2010, has only some point fighting credentials dating back to the 1970's, into 1980.
Yikes.

EA announced that Bobby Lashley, Marius Zaromskis, Joe Riggs, Melvin Manhoef and Nick Diaz will appear on the EA Sports MMA roster, in addition to the other twenty-plus athletes that have already been confirmed to appear in the game.
King of the Cage Announces Several Events for 2010
King of the Cage: The little-big-little-bug promotionKing of the Cage has been a busy promotion, almost since its inception in 1998. 12 years later, a slow start has yielded to an influx of fight card announcements that extend into July, hot on the heels of various whispers of a Mark Burnett and HDnet television deal. I will be cageside for their February 25th show near the promotion's Inland Empire home. But first, a rematch of a bout that was hotly contested last December heads up their New Mexico offering.
The next few KOTC events have been scheduled for Minnesota, New Mexico, Okinawa, and the usual San Manuel Casino venue in San Bernardino, CA. Limited information is available regarding the fight cards but the stock of these events seems to have risen in the past year. The participants in various KOTC events are of a higher caliber since Trebilcock regained control of the promotion from ProElite last year.

Fedor, M-1 Seeks $12.5 in Damages From Affliction Entertainment
These two: Cost Affliction too much moneyWhen the third Affliction event, Affliction: Trilogy was abruptly cancelled immediately following an announcement that one of the main-event fighters had tested positive for anabolic substances, some wondered what the fiscal fallout could yield for those who’d invested time and money with no hope of return in the event’s procurement. Announcements that Affliction has resumed their position as an official UFC sponsor soon after the event’s cancellation lead to further speculation into an already controversial situation.
Today, Affliction attorney Michael Bassiri spoke with well-known MMA new site Sherdog.com regarding the unfortunate situation that has Emelianenko’s management as well as M-1 Global seeking more than $12.5 million in damages. Three separate agreements are outlined in the lawsuit, two of which the Affliction brass states have been expired for months, and one upon which they’ve returned no comment regarding their position.
M-1 Global and Fedor Emelianenko attorney Marc Hines was not immediately available for comment.
David Hojak Interviews Marloes Coenen; Talks Erin Toughill, Title Shot Against "Cyborg" Santos on 1-30-10
Marloes Coenen: Challenging for the Strikeforce TitleAs a co-main event on the Strikeforce card scheduled for January 30th, newly-crowned Strikeforce Women’s Lightweight Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will defend her belt for the first time against Dutch grappling champion Marloes Coenen, once regarded as one of the top female competitors in the world just a couple short years ago, now set to show the world why this Saturday night in Miami.
David Hojak spoke with Marloes last week about her forthcoming bout with Cyborg, her words back and forth since 2004 with well-known women’s MMA veteran Erin Toughill, and the potential for the two to rematch down the line in lieu of their postponed rematch from last year.
Storied as her words back and forth between herself and Toughill have been, some are surprised they haven’t fought since Marloes was knocked out by Erin way back in 2004. Some, Toughill inclusive, have also had their qualms about the fact that Coenen is fighting for a title, given only one win in Strikeforce. However, Coenen is comfortable in the challenger role, and aware of what got her there.
